HMI lamps are ac-operated discharge lamps in which the arc burns in a dense vapor atmosphere comprising mercury and the halides of rare earths. Their main characteristics and advantages are as follows :

• Very high luminous efficacy of up to 100 lm/W
• daylight color temperature of approx. 6000°K
• High color rendering index (Ra > 90)
• Hot restart capability
• Dimmable

• Film and television recording under daylight conditions in the studio or outdoors

Safety

Because of their high luminance, UV radiation and high internal pressure during operation, HMI lamps may only be operated in enclosed lamp casings specially constructed for the purpose. Appropriate filters must ensure that UV radiation is reduced to an acceptable level. Mercury is released if the lamp breaks. Special safety precautions must be taken.
